The Columbine Hondo Bill

The U.S. Senate passed the Columbine Hondo Wilderness Act as part of the National Defence Authorization Act on Fri. December 12th. The bill has now been sent to President Obama, where he is expected to sign it into law. When signed into law this 45,000 acres of wildlife, clean water, and prized hunting and fishing areas will be protected for future generations to enjoy.

The Columbine Hondo is one of the main watersheds of the Rio Grande. This pristine area is surrounded by alpine ridges and peaks reaching 11,000 feet, with the high point called Gold Hill that is 12,711 feet.

This will also convey land to Red River and Taos Ski Valley for public use and modify Wheeler Peak's boundaries, which will complete the popular mountain biking route.
